HC Deb 25 February 1986 vol 92 cc542-3W
Mr. Willie W. Hamilton

asked the Secretary of State for Defence if he will publish a table showing the dates and costs of refits of the Royal Yacht Britannia since 1960, including the estimated cost of the refit planned for 1985–86.

Mr. Lee

The next refit of HMY Britannia is currently planned to start in January 1987. Because the Government are considering inviting tenders from private sector shipyards the estimated cost is commercially confidential. Details of previous refits since 1960 are given in the table. Although these figures are braodly comparable they are not adjusted for changes in accounting conventions, for example, depreciation and other overheads.

Cost of refitting HMY Britannia since 1960
Refit dates Total actual production cost £ million
November 1960 to March 1961 0.194
March 1962 to June 1962 0.063
December 1964 to April 1965 0.324
August 1967 to November 1967 0.234
August 1969 to December 1969 0.474
October 1972 to July 1973 1.782
January 1976 to April 1976 1.379
September 1979 to April 1980 4.915
September 1983 to March 1984 6.692

Mr. Trotter

asked the Secretary of State for Defence whether the Tyneside shipyards will be able to bid for the refit of the royal yacht.

Mr. Lee

If the Government decide to invite tenders from commercial shipyards for the refit of HMY Britannia, the invitation will extend to all suitable shipyards in the United Kingdom which meet the necessary standards.
