asked the Secretary of State for Transport whether he expects British Rail Engineering Limited to follow a policy of open tendering between its workshops for heavy repair work from the various regions of British Rail.

The British Railways Board is introducing a system of competitive tendering for heavy overhauls in which British Rail Engineering Ltd. (BREL) will be in competition with the private sector. The way in which BREL distributes its work load internally is a management matter for the company.
