HC Deb 19 December 1986 vol 107 c777W
Mr. Alton

asked the Secretary of State for Defence whether serving members of the Royal Marine Corps are permitted to undertake paid work for companies or persons outside the corps; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Freeman

Service personnel are permitted to undertake paid work for companies or other private employment subject to certain restrictions.

Each application is given individual attention and approval is dependent on a number of criteria being met. It is important, for instance, that the applicant's additional employment should not interfere with his service duties and that there is no conflict of interest between the needs of the service and the commercial interests of the employer. Particular care is taken to ensure that the company or employer concerned has no contractual or other special relationship with the Ministry of Defence.
