Mr. Coombs

asked the Minister for the Arts what is the increase in real terms in central Government and local authority funding for the arts within the arts programme between 1979–80 and 1987–88 (a) including the extra expenditure consequent upon the abolition of the Greater London council and the metropolitan counties and (b) excluding such money.

Mr. Luce

The increases in central Government and local authority funding between 1979–80 and 1987–88 are 16 per cent. and 10 per cent. in the two cases, respectively.

Mr. Coombs

asked the Minister for the Arts what is the increase in central Government funding of the Arts Council in real terms between 1979–80 and 1987–88 (a) including the extra expenditure condsequent upon the abolition of the Greater London council and the metropolitan counties and (b) excluding such money.

Mr. Luce

The increases in Government funding of the Arts Council in real terms are 30 per cent. and 8 per cent, respectively.

The increase in the two cases are 28 per cent. and 13 per cent., respectively.
