HC Deb 21 April 1986 vol 96 cc26-7W
Mr. Sheerman

asked the Paymaster General how many and what percentage of the 991,000 new jobs that have been created since March 1983 are filled by people on (a) community programmes, (b) enterprise allowance schemes and (c) YTS.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

It is estimated that the 991,000 increase in the employed labour force between March 1983 and December 1985 included 135,000 participants in the community programme and community industry, 50,000 participants in the enterprise allowance scheme and 42,000 in the youth training scheme. These groups represent respectively 14 per cent., 5 per cent. and 4 per cent. of the total increase.

Mr. Sheerman

asked the Paymaster General how many and what percentage of the 554,000 new jobs that have been occupied by women since March 1983 are (a) less than 30 hours per week, (b) less than 20 hours per week, (c) short or no contract jobs and (d) pensioned; and what is the distribution of wages for the various categories.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

The size of the employed labour force increased by 991,000 in Great Britain between March 1983 and December 1985; of this rise 554,000 was among female employees in employment. Out of this increase in female employees, 547,000 (nearly 99 per cent.) was for part-timers working 30 hours or less a week. The estimates do not distinguish separately employees who work less than 20 hours a week, those who have a short contract or no contract, nor those who are employed and have a pension.

Further analysis of the increase of the increase in employment between 1983 and 1985, although on a different basis from the series published in Employment Gazette, will become available from the labour force survey when the preliminary results of the 1985 survey are published on 23 April.
