§ Mr. Austin Mitchellasked the Secretary of State for Transport how both low and intermediate level nuclear waste will be transported to any sites chosen as waste repositories; and what measures will be necessary in order to ensure that there are no possibilities of either radiation leakages or other accidents during transit.
§ Mrs. ChalkerAs with all radioactive material in this country, the transport of low and intermediate level radioactive waste is subject to safety regulations based on the stringent and internationally agreed standards of the International Atomic Energy Agency. These require the design of the transport container to incorporate safety features appropriate to the nature and quantity of the material irrespective of the modes of transport or routes used and taking into account the possibility of severe accidents.
