HC Deb 22 May 1985 vol 79 cc461-2W
66. Mr. Latham

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what recent action he has taken to draw to the attention of the Government of the Soviet Union the strong feelings held in the West about the imprisonment or other forms of ill-treatment of Soviet Jews wishing to emigrate to Israel.

Mr. Rifkind

During the visit of Mr. Gorbachev to Britain last December, both my rigt hon. Friend the Prime Minister and my right hon. and learned Friend drew attention to the widespread concern in this country at the problems faced by Soviet Jewry, particularly on the question of emigration. We have continued to monitor the situation closely, and remain committed to taking suitable opportunities to press the Soviet Union on these and other human rights issues.
