passing by road through Yorkshire and Humberside for the most recent available year, giving details of United Kingdom ports through which the tonnages were shipped;

(3) if he will publish in the Official Report statistics on the export tonnages using Hull and other Humberside ports for the most recently available year, giving origins by region and destinations by continent.

Mr. David Mitchell

The origin and destination of freight traffic through ports is not collected routinely. An origin and destination survey was however carried out in 1978 of international freight traffic, excluding fuel. Table 2b of the report of that survey, "Inland Origins and Destinations of UK International Trade 1978", a copy of which is in the Library, shows the ports used by goods originating in each region. The following table gives information from table 2b for Hull and the other Humber ports, and is expanded to show destination by continent.

Details of road routes were not collected, but table 21 of the report provides some indication of the volume of exports which may have passed through Yorkshire and Humberside.

asked the Secretary of State for Transport if he will publish in the Official Report statistics

on the export tonnages handled (a) by the port of Hull, (b) by other Humberside ports and (c) by the 10 main British ports for each of the last 10 years.

Mr. David Mitchell

Export tonnages for 1974 to 1983, given in the table, are based on regular returns from port authorities and operators. The 10 "main" ports are here selected as those with the highest export tonnage in 1983. For most of these ports, the chief export is oil.
