HC Deb 02 May 1985 vol 78 c235W
Mr. Pavitt

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will issue instructions that all eye testing for spectacles should include tests for intraocular pressure to ensure early diagnosis of the onset of glaucomaa.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

No. The use of ophthalmoscopy for the detection of glaucoma is already part of the routine sight test carried out under the General Ophthalmic Service (GOS). There is also a requirement on GOS practitioners to inform the patient's doctor if any abnormality is detected in the course of the sight test. We are satisfied that these arrangements provide the necessary safeguards for patients.
