HC Deb 25 March 1985 vol 76 cc28-9W
Mr. Alton

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what is the total level of expenditure planned for the construction of (a) motorways and (b) all other new roads in each of the next five years.

Mrs. Chalker

The public expenditure White Paper — Cmnd. 9428 — contains the following total net planning figures for all expenditure on trunk motorways and other trunk roads in England for the next three years:

£ million
1985–86 824
1986–87 870
1987–88 890

1985–86

Of the £824 million net provision for 1985–86, £598 million is for the new construction of motorways and trunk roads. The gross equivalent provision is £620 million of which some £280 million is attributable to motorway schemes.

1986–87–1987–88

Planned provision for new construction in these years is not separately identified between motorways and trunk roads.

Local Roads

Cmnd. 9428 also gives planning totals for local transport capital expenditure in the period 1985–86 to 1987–88. Capital expenditure on road construction in 1985–86 is shown as £502 million, but is not separately identified for the two further years.
