HC Deb 25 March 1985 vol 76 c28W
Mr. Alton

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what is the total level of subsidy given by central Government to passenger transport authorities.

Mrs. Chalker

Expenditure on highways and transport by the six English metropolitan county councils in 1984–85 has been supported by Transport Supplementary Grant (TSG). The amounts of grant are as follows:

£ million
Greater Manchester 22,875
Merseyside 26,628
South Yorkshire 7,413
Tyne and Wear 9,084
West Midlands 17,831
West Yorkshire 22,130
Total 105,961

The councils also receive Rate Support Grant. From 1985–86 TSG will be confined to highways capital expenditure.
