asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many convictions there were in the years 1980 to 1984 for illegal employment of schoolchildren.

The responsibility for the enforcment of legislation relating to the restrictions on employment of children in "industrial undertakings" (such as factories, construction sites, mines and quarries and so on) and agriculture falls to the Health and Safety Executive. The number of convictions obtained by HSE Inspectors for child employment offences in these undertakings is as follows:
