asked the Lord Privy Seal what estimate has been made of the proportion of House of Commons Library staff time spent on (a) dealing directly with hon. Members' requests and (b) dealing with research assistants' and other requests on behalf of hon. Members; and if he will make a statement.

On the basis of a survey taken on 13 June 1985, 80 per cent. of Library staff time was spent dealing directly with hon. Members' requests and 20 per cent. dealing with research assistants and other requests on behalf of hon. Members.
