HC Deb 26 July 1985 vol 83 c847W
Mr. Thurnham

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what plans he has for the privatisation of Manchester airport.

Mr. Michael Spicer

As stated in the White Paper on airports policy (Cmnd. 9542) published on 5 June, we intend to introduce legislation requiring the larger local authority-owned airports — which would include Manchester—to be formed into companies. Although we shall encourage local authority owners to introduce private capital into their airports, I have no plans to legislate to require this.

Mr. Sumberg

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what information he has concerning the usage of British Airways Manchester to New York air service in comparison with the total potential market for the route within the north of England.

Mr. Michael Spicer

New international services take time to establish. BA began service between Manchester and New York only on 1 April 1985 and it would be premature to attempt any assessment at this stage.
