HC Deb 27 February 1985 vol 74 cc175-6W
Mr. Evennett

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what additional measures he intends to introduce to improve the standard of mathematics in secondary schools.

Mr. Dunn

The Government have introduced a range of measures in the light of the Cockcroft report, and will continue to take action to disseminate and encourage the implementation of the report's findings. In addition, support under the education support grant scheme will be provided, from September 1985, for additional mathematics advisers and advisory teachers in almost all LEAs. The introduction of the GCSE examination will encourage further improvements in the teaching of mathematics.
