HC Deb 27 February 1985 vol 74 c197W
Mr. Alton

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry whether he will extend flame resistant regulations to all children's nightwear including pyjamas.

Mr. Fletcher

My Department has just completed a consultation exercise with a large number of consumer, trade and enforcement bodies on new regulations for nightwear flammability. Under the proposed regulations children's nightdresses and dressing gowns will have to meet the flammability requirements of BS 5722:1984. All other nightwear including children's pyjamas will have to carry a label relating to its fire performance. The consumer bodies are generally happy with the proposed scope of the regulations.

Subject to any views the European Commission may have, I would hope to submit the new regulations for parliamentary approval shortly.
