§ Mr. Sheermanasked the Secretary of State for Transport what assessment he has made of the benefits of anti-lock braking systems in reducing accidents involving heavy goods vehicles; and if he intends to introduce regulations requiring their fitment to such vehicles.
§ Mr. ChalkerAnti-lock braking systems are now being fitted to the majority of new heavy trailers, and this should result in a reduction in certain types of accident involving heavy articulated vehicles. Legal requirements for vehicle braking systems are laid down in a European Community directive which at present does not specify anti-lock. Changes to the directive are under discussion which may lead to more widespread use of anti-lock and requirements that it should be fitted to certain categories of heavy vehicle.
