Mr. Speller

asked the Secretary of State for Energy if he will list the current membership of the Advisory Council on Research and Development with details of those who have nominated the members; and how long each member has served on the Advisory Council on Research and Development.

The current membership of the Advisory Council on Research and Development for Fuel and Power is as follows, with members' dates of appointment being shown in parentheses:

  • Chairman — Professor Sir Sam Edwards, FRS — chief scientific adviser, Department of Energy (1983).
  • Mr. J. R. Baker—managing director, mechanical group, Northern Engineering Industries plc (1984).
  • Mr. R. Bexon—deputy chairman, BP (1984).
  • Dr. T. Broom — director general of research, Central Electricity Generating Board (1981).
  • Mr. G. Clerehugh — director of research, British Gas Corporation (1983).
  • Dr. I. Dunstan— director of standards British Standards Institution (1985).
  • Professor Sir John Kingman — chairman, Scientific and Engineering Research Council (1981).
  • Dr. T. Marsham—full-time board member UKAEA and managing director, UKAEA, Risley (1974).
  • Professor L. Maunder—professor of mechanical engineering University of Newcastle upon Tyne (1981).
  • Mr. R. W. Orson—board member, The Electricity Council (1976).
  • Mr. R. Rawlinson — technical director, National Coal Board (1984).
  • Dr. L. E. J. Roberts—full-time board member UKAEA and director AERE, Harwell (1984).

  • Dr. H. Rose—group technical director, Foseco Minsep plc (1975).
  • Dr. R. Telfer — director, Manchester Business School (1981).
  • Mr. K. Williams — industrial fellow, Churchill College, Cambridge (1982).

Of the above Dr. Broom, Mr. Clerehugh, Sir John Kingman, Dr. Marsham, Mr. Orson, Mr. Rawlinson and Dr. Roberts are nominees of their respective organisations. The remaining eight members are independent members appointed by the Secretary of State for Energy.

The Chief Scientific Adviser to the Cabinet Office, Sir Robin Nicholson, and the Chief Scientist and Engineer, Department of Trade and Industry, Mr. O. Roith, serve on the council as assessors. Sir Robin Nicholson was appointed in 1984. Mr. Roith was appointed in 1981 originally as a full member when employed by BP, becoming an assessor in 1982 following his move to the DTI.
