HC Deb 30 April 1985 vol 78 c121W
25. Mr. Chapman

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what are, and if he is satisfied with, the proportions of the costs of his Department relating to tri-service and individual service advertising and recruiting.

Mr. Lee

Recruiting costs, including advertising, are financed on a single service basis. However expenditure on service recruiting for the financial year 1983–84 totalled £44.6 million at outturn prices. Advertising and publicity costs made up some £9 million of this total, or about 20 per cent. of the recruiting budget. Estimated total expenditure on recruiting for financial year 1984–85 at outturn prices is £48.5 million, of which about £12.6 million was spent on advertising and publicity or 26 per cent. of the recruiting budget.
