§ Mr. Evennettasked the Secretary of State for Social Services whether he intends to seek to restrict the sponsorship of sports by tobacco companies.
§ Mr. WaldegraveI have been asked to reply.
The sponsorship of sport by tobacco companies is already restricted by the voluntary agreement between the industry and the Government. This restricts expenditure to the 1976 level; stipulates that the Government health warning should appear on advertisements for sponsored events and on promotional signs at these events; calls on companies to keep expenditure on media advertising and promotional activities within a reasonable proportion of total sponsorship expenditure with specific limitations on the amount of promotional material at televised events; places controls on which sports can be sponsored; and calls on companies not to sponsor activities in which the majority of participants are under 18 years of age.
