HC Deb 30 October 1984 vol 65 cc952-3W
Mr. Pavitt

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services (1) how many nurse teachers have retired and not been replaced since the English National Board assumed its responsibilities on 1 July 1983;

(2) how many nurse teachers were in post in each of the last five years before 1 July 1983.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

Information on the numbers of nurse teachers who have retired and not been replaced since 1 July 1983 is not readily available. I understand from the English National Board that a recent survey has shown that between October 1983 and March 1984 46 nurse teachers retired. In recent years there has been an overall increase in nurse teachers as the following figures show:

Hospital nursing tutorial staff in England in post at 30 September—Whole-time equivalent
Number
1978 3,060
1979 3,030
1980 3,120
1981 3,390
1982 3,560

Note:

The figures exclude midwifery tutorial staff and those working in the community.
