Mr. Tom Cox

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what has been the effect on general medical beds for women in the Wandsworth area health authority of the closing of the South London hospital for women; and in which local hospital extra beds for women have been provided.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

There was considerable under-utilisation of general medical beds at the South London hospital for women and at St. James' hospital. It was therefore not considered necessary to provide additional beds in this specialty following the closure of the South London hospital and the work load has been absorbed at St. George's and St. James' hospitals. An additional 28 obstetric beds have been provided at St. George's hospital and an additional 15 gynaecology beds at St. James' hospital.

Mr. Tom Cox

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will list the hospitals in the Wandsworth area health authority which are providing the following medical services: Well Woman clinic, cytology, home style birth rooms, family planning with women staff, anti-smoking clinic, early diagnostic breast screening, pre-menstrual tension clinic, laser treatment of early carcinoma of the cervix, accident and emergency services and services for emergency gynaecology patients.
