asked the Secretary of State for Wales by what percentage the number of (a) civil servants in his Department and (b) local government employees in Wales has declined since 1978.

Between December 1978 and June 1984 the number of Welsh Office staff, on a full-time equivalent basis, has been reduced by 15.1 per cent. Over the same period and on the same basis manpower in the local government sector, excluding the law and order services, has fallen by 4.1 per cent.
