HC Deb 30 November 1984 vol 68 c618W
Mrs. Renee Short

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will issue guidance to local education authorities about including on their primary schools' curricula education about dangers involved in alcohol, solvents, tobacco and drugs.

Mr. Dunn

It is for individual schools and local education authorities to determine the content of health education elements of the curriculum in the light of their own circumstances. The Department has given advice on alcohol, smoking and drugs, including discussion of approaches which may appropriately be adopted with young children, in its publication "Health Education in Schools" and on solvent misuse in its "Safety in Education" bulletin issued in June. The Department: is urgently considering what further assistance may be given to local education authorities in the context of the Government's overall policy for tackling drug misuse among young people.
