HC Deb 29 November 1984 vol 68 c563W
Mr. Greg Knight

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what guidance his Department has given to motorists in relation to the correct use of rear fog warning lights on motor vehicles.

Mrs. Chalker

Publicity about the correct use of rear fog lights has been issued in the form of a TV filler film, radio announcements and feature articles. Guidance is now included in the "Highway Code", which advises motorists that rear fog lights should be used only when visibility is seriously reduced, and not simply because it is dark, or raining, or misty. This advice will shortly be amended to explain that for visibility to be seriously reduced it would generally need to be less than 100 metres. A small leaflet setting out the important points about the use of lights, including guidance about rear fog lights, is being prepared for issue to all vehicle owners with their annual tax reminders, starting early next year.
