§ Mr. David Atkinsonasked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what recent initiatives Her Majesty's Government have taken or supported at the United Nations to end the Iran-Iraq war.
§ Mr. RentonWe wish to see the earliest possible end to the tragic and wasteful conflict in the Gulf. We fully supported UN Security Council resolution No. 552 of 1 June, which called on all states to respect the right of free navigation in the Gulf, and the UN Secretary-General's call on 9 June to refrain from attacks on civilian population centres, which has largely been observed. We will continue to support any measures designed to limit the scope of the conflict.
