HC Deb 19 November 1984 vol 68 c46W
Mr. Best

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what is his policy regarding the marketing of products designed to reduce blood alcohol levels in the context of matters for which he is responsible; and what assessment he has made of the effect of such products on road safety.

Mrs. Chalker

The rate at which alcohol is absorbed into the bloodstream is affected by a variety of factors. Whilst some products can slow down this process, I am not aware of any evidence which suggests that the elimination of alcohol from the body can be significantly speeded up. My general policy is to warn drivers of the risks involved in driving after drinking under any circumstances.

Mr. Best

asked the Secretary of State for Transport if he will mount an advertising campaign to warn motorists of the hazards of drinking and then driving after consuming products claimed to induce a drop in blood alcohol levels.

Mrs. Chalker

We shall shortly be launching our Christmas drink-drive publicity campaign warning drivers of the risks involved in driving after drinking under any circumstances.
