HC Deb 13 November 1984 vol 67 c174W
Mr. Marlow

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement on his recent visit to the middle east.

Sir Geoffrey Howe

I visited Lebanon and Israel between 28 and 30 October. In Lebanon I was able to reaffirm to President Gemayel our support for the withdrawal of all foreign forces from his country. In Israel, I had friendly and open discussions with Israeli Ministers, primarily on the problems of Lebanon and on the Arab-Israel dispute. I also had a most useful meeting with Palestinian representatives.

Mr. Adley

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs under what circumstances Her Majesty's Government will fund the armed forces of the Crown to serve in the middle east in territory invaded by and occupied by Israel; and if such criteria apply to Lebanese, Egyptian, Jordanian and Syrian territory.

Mr. Luce

The 10 members of the European Community have said that they are prepared to participate in international guarantees for a peace settlement of the Arab-Israel dispute. The multinational force and observers in Sinai includes a small British headquarters contingent. There are no current plans to station further British contingents in the region.
