asked the Secretary of State for Transport what was the estimated cost of (a) road accidents and (b) rail accidents in Great Britain for the latest year in which these figures are available, broken down into (i) lost output, (ii) police and administration, (iii) medical and ambulance, (iv) damage to property and (v) allowance for loss in human terms.

There are no figures available for the cost of rail accidents in Great Britain.

For road accidents, average cost per accident in 1982 is given in table R on page 17 of "Road Accidents Great Britain 1982", a copy of which is in the Library. Total costs, including a breakdown by cost element, are given in paragraph 11.4 on the same page.
