HC Deb 22 May 1984 vol 60 c442W
Mrs. Ann Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many people have been employed in armaments manufacture in the United Kingdom in each year since 1974.

Mr. Alan Clark

The following table gives the estimated number of employees in employment in the armaments industry in the United Kingdom. The figures for June 1974 to September 1981(a) relate to minimum list heading 342 of the 1968 standard industrial classification. Those for September 1981 (b) to June 1983 relate to group 329 of the 1980 SIC. As there are differences in definition between the two classifications the two series are not entirely comparable.

Mrs. Ann Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many people have been employed in armament sales in the United Kingdom in each year since 1974.

Mr. Alan Clark

The information is not available. The Department's employment statistics are analysed according to the standard industrial classification, which does not separately distinguish armament sales.
