Mr. Kilroy-Silk

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many establishments inspected by the Wages Inspectorate were found to have underpaid workers and how many workers were involved in 1984 in the north-west (west) division of the Wages Inspectorate.

Mr. Gummer

Between 1 January and 31 March 1984, 181 of the establishments inspected in the north-west (west) division of the Wages Inspectorate were found to have underpaid a total of 327 workers.

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will name the 865 establishments in the north-west (west) division of the Wages Inspectorate that underpaid workers in 1983.

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many employers in the north-west (west) division of the Wages Inspectorate were prosecuted for underpaying wages in 1983; and what was the outcome in each case.

The north-west (west) division of the Wages Inspectorate includes Lancashire, the metropolitan district of Wigan, Merseyside and the Wirral including the towns and surrounding areas of Runcorn and Widnes in Cheshire.
