Mr. Concannon

asked the Secretary of State for Employment when the European Council of Ministers will next be meeting to discuss social matters; what particular topics are likely to be on the agenda; and who will be representing Her Majesty's Government.

Mr. Gummer

The Council of Ministers (Labour and Social Affairs) will be meeting on 7 June; my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State will represent the United Kingdom. Ministers are expected to discuss a number of important proposals from the European Commission relating in a variety of ways to the current employment situation in Europe covering working time, women's unemployment, employee information (Vredeling), local employment initiatives, technological change and social adjustment, and a medium term social action programme.
