§ 32. Mr. Strangasked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many young people were unemployed in the Edinburgh travel-to-work area on the latest available date; and what was the comparable figure five years ago.
§ Mr. Allan StewartAt 12 January 1984, the latest date for which information is available, there were 3,353 and 33,669 unemployed claimants aged under 18 years in the Edinburgh travel-to-work area and Scotland respectively. At 11 January 1979 the number of unemployed registrants in this age group totalled 1,745 for the Edinburgh travel-to-work area and 22,373 for Scotland. The figures are not directly comparable owing to the change in October 1982 to a claimant based unemployment count.
