§ Mr. Kirkwoodasked the Secretary of State for Scotland what codes of practice are adopted by his Department regarding regular maintenance cycles for buildings administered by his Department.
§ Mr. YoungerMaintenance of buildings on the Civil Estate is mainly the responsibility of my right hon. Friend, the Secretary of State for the Environment. The minor maintenance work under £1,000 for which my Department is now responsible is not readily susceptible to the applicaion of detailed codes of practice. An annual inspection of premises is undertaken to ensure acceptable standards of maintenance.
The Scottish prison service makes systematic use of appropriate codes of practice produced by BSI, professional institutes and trade associations and public utilities in undertaking all prison building and engineering maintenance. My Department responds to the need for maintenance of buildings on my agricultural land settlement estates either at the request of a tenant or following regular inspection of the properties by professional officers.
