HC Deb 03 May 1984 vol 59 c209W
Mr. Kilroy-Silk

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many life sentence prisoners in the categories of those who will now normally serve at least 20 years have been (a) considered by local review committees, (b) considered by the Parole Board and (c) recommended by the Parole Board for release on licence; and in how many cases recommendations by the Parole Board for release on licence have been accepted by his Department, in each case since 11 October 1983.

Mr. Mellor

The Parole Board have considered six such cases since 11 October 1983, all of which had previously been considered by the local review committee. In no case did the board recommend the prisoner's release on licence.

Mr. Kilroy-Silk

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many prisoners serving sentences of over five years for violence or drug trafficking have been (a) considered by local review committees, (b) considered by the Parole Board and (c) recommended for release by the Parole Board; and in how many cases recommendations for release by the Parole Board have been accepted by his Department, in each case since 11 October 1983.

Mr. Hurd

An assessment will be made of the working of the first six months of the new policy, which came into effect on 1 December 1983. Extracting the requested information in advance of this assessment would involve disproportionate expense.
