asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry if he will make a statement on the assistance Her Majesty's Government are giving to high technology industries; and if he will make a statement.

My Department's support for high technology industries is provided largely through its programme for scientific and technological assistance. The 1984–85 provision for that programme is £380 million. In addition, provision totalling some £30 million has been made available for 1984–85 for measures under the Industrial Development Act 1982 specifically concerning the further development and application of new technologies.
