HC Deb 23 March 1984 vol 56 c601W
Mr. Soames

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what has been the cost of the improvements undertaken on Ascension Island to Ministry of Defence facilities; and what is their extent.

Sir George Young

The PSA is responsible for building and improving the facilities required by the Ministry of Defence on Ascension Island and completed a new camp for RAF personnel on the island in December 1983 at a cost of £18 million. This replaced the temporary, inadequate and scattered accommodation used previously. Work is in hand to upgrade a number of operational facilities at Wideawake airfield at a cost of about £30 million.
