HC Deb 20 March 1984 vol 56 c405W
38. Mr. Coombs

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if, in the planning of Government-sponsored training measures, he is satisfied that he is fully informed as to the future requirements of skills in British industry; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Peter Morrison

It is essential for employers to identify and plan to meet their own skill training requirements. My right hon. Friend and I do, however, receive regular evidence about the extent of current or anticipated shortages in skill supply. In the recent White Paper "Training for Jobs" — Cmnd. 9135 — the Government endorsed the Manpower Services Commission's new strategy for adult training which is aimed specifically at bringing the commission's own programmes into line with market needs, including training in the new technologies.
