asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what was the profit made by the Post Office in 1982–83; what was the profit for the comparable activities in 1972–73; and if he will express both figures on a consistent basis.

Mr. Trippier

In 1982–83 the Post Office, excluding National Girobank, made a profit of £131.6 million. In 1972–73 the postal business made a loss of £42.5 million.
