HC Deb 14 March 1984 vol 56 c163W
Mr. Pawsey

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry how many cases were referred to the Post Office investigation branch in 1983 and 1973, respectively.

Mr. Trippier

The total number of crimes involving mail losses referred to the investigation department was:

Numbers
1982–83 14,767
1972–73 13,678

Note:

One case might involve the theft of a large number of individual letters.

Full records are not kept of cases referred where no evidence of criminality is found and investigation not pursued, but the department estimates that at present these would amount to about an additional 10,000 per year.
