HC Deb 14 March 1984 vol 56 c178W
Mr. Dubs

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs how many persons in the United Kingdom have diplomatic immunity; and how many of these are entitled to drive motor cars.

Mr. Whitney

The number of people enjoying diplomatic immunity in the United Kingdom is 4,933. It would involve a disproportionate effort to count the individual members of the families of the persons listed. It is estimated that their total number is approximately 14,800. The spouses and dependent children over 17 of persons enjoying immunity are entitled to drive motor cars provided they produce a valid overseas or international driving licence. We do not know how many of them are in fact entitled.
