HC Deb 12 March 1984 vol 56 c22W
41. Sir Anthony Meyer

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what action he proposes to draw the attention of local authorities to the possibilities of using refuse as fuel.

Mr. Waldegrave

We are continually encouraging local authorities to recycle waste in ways which are both economically feasible, and environmentaly acceptable.

We will shortly publish a general guide to mechanical waste sorting in the light of experience of the experimental plants at Newcastle and Doncaster for deriving fuel from waste. We have given both financial and technical assistance to the development of these plants and a detailed report on them will be published later this year. In addition, we will be arranging a seminar in October on waste processing and resource recovery. This will be done in association with the Institute of Wastes Management and the Warren Spring laboratory.
