§ Mr. Alex Carlileasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department for how many remand prisoners Her Majesty's remand centre, Risley, was designed; and how many (a) adult male, (b) adult female, (c) young male, (d) young female, (e) juvenile male and (f) juvenile female prisoners are currently held there on remand.
§ Mr. HurdThe certified normal accommodation at Risley remand centre is 595 places but, as at most local prisons and remand centres, the daily population is generally well in excess of this figure. The total population at Risley on 30 November 1983 was 850, comprising 720 remand prisoners and 130 other prisoners. The information readily available on the remand prisoners is given in the following table:

§ Mr. HurdDuring the week commencing 12 February there were 350 prison officer class discipline staff in post at Risley, including three part-time staff.
