HC Deb 08 March 1984 vol 55 c655W
Mr. Alex Carlile

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many civil servants of the rank of executive officer and above are employed in connection with prisons; and, by rank, how many of them have experience of service within prisons at prison officer level or above.

Mr. Hurd

I shall reply as soon as possible.

Mr. Alex Carlile

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many convicted and unconvicted men are currently held in prisons; and how many have to slop out as part of their prison duties.

Mr. Hurd

On 31 January 1984 there were about 33,000 sentenced, 1,350 convicted unsentenced, and 6,500 untried male prisoners in prison department establishments in England and Wales. Information on how many have to slop out is not available centrally and could be provided only at disproportionate cost.
