Mr. Dobson

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will give a breakdown by specialty of the

Service administrative and clerical staff, whole-time equivalents, in total and by region for 30 September and 31 December 1981, 30 September and 30 December 1982, 30 September and 31 December 1983 (a) including and (b) excluding ambulance officers and control assistants.

The figures requested are in the following tables. There are no figures available for 31 December 1981.

National Health Service staff who have retired under the premature retirement scheme; and how many in each speciality were qualified in medicine and nursing, respectively.

By 31 October 1983, the 14 health regions in England had approved the premature retirement of 2,529 officers under arrangements arising out of the 1982 restructuring and forwarded these to the Department for certification. These were broken down into staff groups as follows:

The "other" staff consisted of a variety of staff groups including pharmaceutical, catering, domestic, professions supplementary to medicine and ancillary staff.

All the medical and dental staff and nursing staff were qualified.
