Mr. Austin Mitchell

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what the total cost of the European Economic Community Assembly is likely to be in the current financial year; and if he will identify separately the cost of salaries, allowances and all other expenses, including accommodation, of the Members of the Assembly.

The cost of the European Parliament in 1984 is estimated at 239 million ecu. The basic salaries of Members of the European Parliament are paid by their national Governments. The estimated cost of United Kingdom MEPs salaries in 1984 is £1.4 million.

The estimated costs in 1984 of allowances and other expenses of Members of the European Parliament which are borne by the Parliament's budget are as follows:
