HC Deb 06 March 1984 vol 55 c503W
Mr. Austin Mitchell

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is covered by the item in the European Economic Commission budget for informing young people in the European spirit; how much has been and is being spent on this subject; and what part the subject of youth unemployment plays in this programme.

Mr. Ian Stewart

This heading covers support for youth exchanges and the inclusion of European studies in the curricula of educational institutions; expenditure on this amounted to some 3.5 million ecu over the period 1980 to 1982. The provision entered in the 1983 and 1984 Community budgets is some 200,000 and 400,000 ecu, respectively.

Expenditure by the Community for dealing with the problem of youth unemployment is included in the social fund; the 1984 Community budget includes provision of 732.5 million ecu for measures to combat unemployment among young people under 25.
