HC Deb 05 March 1984 vol 55 c397W
Mr. Wigley

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will review the workings of the police initial recruitment test to ascertain whether police forces, from area to area, are satisfied that it is a sufficiently flexible test to identify suitable candidates in each area.

Mr. Hurd

The test, which is only one element of the police recruit selection procedures, is not designed to identity suitable candidates but to screen out those who lack the basic education to cope with initial police training and, then, the duties of a police officer. I am satisfied that the existing test is suitable for this purpose.
