asked the Secretary of State for Transport if he will set out the programme for improvements to the section of the Al between Wetherby and Dishforth.

Improvement to this section of the Al to dual three-lane carriageway is listed in our 1983 roads White Paper in the main programme for 1987 onwards. But the nature and timing of this scheme will be affected by the outcome of the public inquiry into the Kirkhamgate to Dishforth proposals. I am awaiting the inspector's report on this and hope to announce a decision by the end of this year.
