HC Deb 21 June 1984 vol 62 c215W
31. Sir Anthony Meyer

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department which categories of remand prisoners are put in category A.

Mr. Hurd

An unconvicted prisoner is placed provisionally in category A if it is considered that the prisoner would be highly dangerous to the public, the police or the security of the state should he or she escape. A prisoner's security category is not determined formally until after he or she has been sentenced.
